What are veterinary medicines?
Veterinary medicines are medicines intended for animals. They are used to prevent and treat diseases and to maintain the health of animals.
Where can I find information on authorised veterinary medicines?
All veterinary medicines approved in Austria can be found in the Medicinal Products Register of the BASG. You can look them up under “Use → Veterinary”.
What to do in case of side effects?
If you suspect that a veterinary medicine has caused side effects, you can report this directly to the Federal Agency for Safety in Health Care (BASG).

What types of veterinary medicinal products are there?
Immunological veterinary medicinal products
These include:
- Vaccines for animals (actively protect against infectious diseases)
- Immune sera (passive protection)
- Immunomodulators (affect the immune system)
- Tuberculins (used for tuberculosis tests)
Veterinary medicinal products – hormones Responsibilities at AGES:
- Veterinary medicinal products containing hormones: These contain hormonal active substances and are used for special treatments.
- Stock-specific vaccines: Vaccines produced for a specific animal stock.
- Antibiotic sales volumes in veterinary medicine: This refers to the quantities of antibiotics sold in veterinary medicine.
- Residues in food: Checks are carried out to determine whether residues of veterinary medicinal products are present in food.
- Control of animal-based food: This ensures that food from animals is safe.
