Herbal medicinal products
When are herbal medicinal products used?
They can be used to treat various conditions, for example:
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Diseases of the respiratory tract (e.g. cough and cold)
- Complaints in the urogenital tract (e.g. bladder, kidneys)
- Circulatory complaints
- Mental stress and mood disorders (e.g. sleep problems)
- Gynaecology
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Skin diseases
Important information:
- Herbal medicines are not miracle cures.
- In the case of serious illness, they may however be used as supportive treatment.
Where can I find information on approved products?
- All herbal medicines approved in Austria can be found in the Register of medicinal products under the category ‘Phytoarzneimittel’ (herbal medicinal products).
- For traditional herbal medicines, select the category “traditionelle pflanzliche Registrierungen” (traditional herbal medicinal products).
Further information
- European assessment reports on over 160 medicinal plants can be found on the EMA website.
- Many homeopathic medicinal products are derived from raw material of herbal origin. However, they should not be regarded as herbal medicinal products.
