Herbal medicinal products

When are herbal medicinal products used?

They can be used to treat various conditions, for example:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Diseases of the respiratory tract (e.g. cough and cold)
  • Complaints in the urogenital tract (e.g. bladder, kidneys)
  • Circulatory complaints
  • Mental stress and mood  disorders (e.g. sleep problems)
  • Gynaecology
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Skin diseases

Important information:

  • Herbal medicines are not miracle cures.
  • In the case of serious illness, they may however be used as supportive treatment.

Where can I find information on approved products?

  • All herbal medicines approved in Austria can be found in the Register of medicinal products under the category ‘Phytoarzneimittel’ (herbal medicinal products).
  • For traditional herbal medicines, select the category “traditionelle pflanzliche Registrierungen” (traditional herbal medicinal products).

Further information

  • European assessment reports on over 160 medicinal plants can be found on the EMA website.
  • Many homeopathic medicinal products are derived from raw material of herbal origin. However, they should not be regarded as herbal medicinal products.
  • Information on homeopathic medicinal products is also available in the Register of Medicinal Products under the category “Homeopathics”.
