Drug regulatory authorities: Cooperation between Switzerland and Austria

messages in brief | 15/03/2017

Swissmedic , the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, wants to work more closely with its partner authority in Austria. Swissmedic Director Jürg H. Schnetzer and Christa Wirthumer-Hoche, Business Unit Head of Medical Market Surveillance at the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety GmbH (AGES) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Vienna, which creates the formal basis for intensified cooperation and bilateral initiatives.

Agreement with Switzerland

Swissmedic has concluded cooperation agreements with all German-speaking therapeutic products authorities. Against this background, the recent agreement with the Austrian Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) is of particular strategic importance for Switzerland. In a constantly changing regulatory environment and increasingly global as well as complex development and production of therapeutic products, the pooling of resources and capacities in the context of deepened international cooperation is an important factor. For this reason, Swissmedic has been striving for several years to improve cooperation in the therapeutic products sector with foreign partner authorities. The main focus of bilateral networking is on therapeutic products authorities in the EU and in countries that are of strategic interest to Switzerland.
