WNV Update Italy

The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care has been informed by the Italian authority, that, in addition to the previously announced regions, confirmed human cases of WNV have occurred in Genoa (Liguria Region) and Asti (Piemonte Region). (Piemonte Region), confirmed human WNV cases have occurred.

In addition, due to the detection of WNV NAT positive mosquitoes, birds and horses, respectively, ID WNV NAT testing has been introduced for donors of blood and blood components:

Rome (Lazio region), Matera (Basilicata region), southern Sardinia, Cagliari, Sassari, Oristano, and Nuoro (Sardinia region), and Pordeno Sardinia), and Pordenone (Friuli-Venetia Giulia region).

Nationwide in Italy, donors who have spent at least one night in these regions will be tested for WNV NAT or 28 days are excluded from donation.
