CHESSMEN Board meets in Rome to discuss shortage prevention

messages in brief | 20/10/2023

The project management board of the Joint Action CHESSMEN – Coordination and Harmonisation of the Existing Systems against Shortages of Medicines European Network, took place in Rome on 2-3 October 2023. Some of the topics discussed were key definitions related to shortage management, root causes of shortages, minimum common data set and best practices regarding the use of IT systems, and mitigation and prevention measures of shortages.

Gathered in Rome, 50 delegates from 27 national competent authorities discussed solutions for more coordinated approaches towards shortage management and stronger and more robust shortage management systems in Europe. Participants analysed the work developed and agreed on the next steps of CHESSMEN, a 3-year project financed by the European Commission to harmonize and prevent the way shortages are managed in Europe. The intermediary meeting of Joint Action CHESSMEN was scheduled for 17 - 18 June 2024, in Lisbon.

This project, which has officially started on 16 January 2023 and will be running for three years, is led by the Italian Medicines Agencies (AIFA - Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco) with the support of the Italian National Health Institute (CNS and CNT) and benefits from the active participation of a wide consortium involving 27 organizations (associated and affiliated organizations) in representation of 22 EU Member States.
